The Community Correspondent® Code Of Honor

What is a Community Correspondent®?

With the explosion of the World Wide Web, we have gone from Mass Media to "We the Media." And the concept of "We the Media" is an all encompassing opportunity for us all to decide what is news and information and make our own contribution, as much as we decide what news we consume and where and how we consume it. This site is for you and your community. While other sites invite you to submit, the NTV Community Correspondent® is the only site that guarantees publication. And all stories, no matter how great, important, trivial, funny or tragic, will be published as a headline. We at NTV believe that the citizens of our marketplace will use this platform to share, inform, alert and support this site wisely.

How does the site work?

The NTV Community Correspondent® site is very simple. Create your profile by clicking on the "Register" tab located in the upper right hand corner, or click here. Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email which you will need to click on to confirm your registration.

If you do not receive a confirmation email immediately, please check your deleted items or your spam folder in your email. If you ever need to update your profile or change information, simply log-in and click on "Edit” or click here. Here you can tell others about yourself, as well as upload your favorite photo.

If you forget your password, you can submit your email address and your password will be sent to you, or click here. As a registered user, you will be able to post stories, comment on stories and rate them. The NTV News Team monitors the site constantly and relies on it as a resource for news on their television broadcasts.

What’s a Whistleblower?

A whistleblower is an employee, former employee, or member of an organization, especially a business or government agency, who reports misconduct to people or entities that have the power and presumed willingness to take corrective action. Generally the misconduct is a violation of law, rule, regulation and/or a direct threat to public interest — fraud, health, safety violations, and corruption are just a few examples.

Do you have something you’d like to expose? Send us a message using our whistleblower section.

What’s the difference between a public gallery and a private gallery?

Public galleries are galleries that anyone can post a picture to. For example, let’s say there was a town parade and you took some great shots and started a gallery. You decided to make it public so anyone else that attended the same parade could also add his or her pictures.

Private galleries are galleries that DO NOT allow other users to post pictures to. The images in a private gallery are exclusive to the creator of the gallery.

What’s an RSS feed?

RSS (which stands for "Really Simple Syndication") is a web feed used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.

By subscribing to the Community Correspondent® RSS feed you can keep yourself updated on all the latest postings to the site. Subscribe now. If you need help subscribing to our RSS feed, please visit our Tips & Tutorials section.

I want to contribute but I'm a little nervous.

You don't need to write your own stories to be a Community Correspondent®. Just visit the site often. Read the stories. Comment on the stories. Rate the stories. These are all dynamic elements of that shape the face and features of your community. And it supports those who do contribute content and lets them know someone is out there appreciating what they are doing. After you get comfortable with the site, you might be more inclined to publish your own stories. And don't forget, while not all of us have true breaking news happening before us, we can all share a fun photo, an unusual weather picture or a letter from a distant soldier.

I'm not a good writer but I want to contribute. What should I do?

Here are some basic suggestions:

Make sure your first paragraph summarizes the story or at least clearly defines your story's main point or subject.

Attribute all statistics, sources and quotes. If you cannot remember the exact words of a statement, paraphrase the quote. Keep the story simple. Don't rant. If you express an opinion, state it as such. Read your story out loud before hitting the publish button. Know your audience. They care about the same things you do. Don't forget the basics: Who, what, when, where, how and why.

The Community Correspondent® Code Of Honor

Above all else, respect others. If you see disrespectful behavior, report it, rather than further inflaming the situation. Keep your headlines accurate and free of sensationalistic language. Be careful reporting rumors, hearsay or anything unsubstantiated. If you believe it is compelling information, state it as such. "Rumor: Google in reported talks to "wire" downtown Kearney."

Do not publish offensive language, or obscene photos. If you do choose to do this, your story be removed, your account will be frozen and you will no longer have publishing rights. Part of the code is also to report anything you see that is obscene or offensive so that we may all enjoy the freedoms of an open marketplace.
